Privacy isn't a feature we bolted on — it's the reason OpenBook exists. Your conversations are end-to-end encrypted by default, we collect as little as possible, and we never sell your data.
This policy tells you exactly what we do with your data. No small print.
OpenBook is a product of Moneta Eight FZE LLC, a Free Zone Establishment registered in the United Arab Emirates.
We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we use it.
If you have any questions, contact us at hello@openbookchat.ae.
We collect only what is needed to give you the OpenBook experience:
Location: we only use your location when you choose to — for example when you share your location in a chat, or for prayer times and Qibla direction, which are calculated on your device and not stored on our servers.
Camera, microphone and photos: used only when you take a photo, record a voice note or video, make a call, or pick something to send. When you pick photos, Apple's private photo picker means we only ever receive the items you choose — never your library.
We use your data only to provide and improve OpenBook:
We do not use your data for advertising. We do not build advertising profiles. We do not sell your data to anyone, ever.
Your conversations on OpenBook are end-to-end encrypted by default with OpenBook Zero, our encryption system.
It is switched on for every account — including accounts created before it launched — and it cannot be turned off.
What is end-to-end encrypted: the messages, photos, videos, voice notes and files you send in your one-to-one chats, including the names of the files. They are encrypted on your device before they leave it, using keys that stay on the devices of the people in that conversation. Our servers, and the cloud providers that run them, only ever store and pass along the encrypted version — they are never given the keys to unlock it. Even notification previews are unlocked on your phone: Apple's and Google's notification services only ever carry the encrypted message.
Calls: voice and video calls — one-to-one and group calls — are end-to-end encrypted whenever everyone in the call has OpenBook Zero turned on, and the call shows a lock when it is. Each call gets its own fresh key, shared only with the people in that call inside an OpenBook Zero envelope. Our calling provider, Agora, relays the call so it reaches you, but it never has the key and can't listen to or watch it. If someone in the call can't receive the key, the call still connects but is not end-to-end encrypted, and no lock is shown.
Circles: a Circle's host can switch on end-to-end encryption at any time. Once it's on, it can't be turned off, and every message, photo and file sent in that Circle from then on is encrypted for its members. Messages sent before encryption was switched on stay as they were — stored securely on our servers, but not end-to-end encrypted. The Circle shows whether it's encrypted.
What we can still see: to deliver messages, our servers need some information that is not end-to-end encrypted — who you talk to, when, and whether a message was delivered or read, plus your profile name and photo and the names and members of Circles. This information is encrypted in transit and at rest and protected by strict access controls.
What encryption can't do: it protects your messages on the way and while they sit on our servers. It can't protect a phone that has been unlocked by someone else or compromised by malicious software, a screenshot or photo taken by someone in the conversation, or copies of your phone that you back up elsewhere. No security is perfect, and we keep working to make OpenBook Zero stronger.
Translation: when you choose to translate a message, we first use Apple's built-in translation and Apple's on-device AI, so your words stay on your phone. Only if your device can't translate a language is the message translated by our AI provider instead (see Section 8) — which means that one message leaves the end-to-end envelope, in the same way as a message to Luna. Translation only ever happens when you ask for it.
Vault, our secure document and information storage, is also protected by OpenBook Zero.
Four things sit outside the end-to-end envelope, by necessity or by your choice: conversations with Luna and Luna features (Section 8) — except Private mode, which never leaves your phone, messages you translate with our AI provider when your device can't, Chapters you post (Section 7), and messages you choose to report (Section 6).
Void messages are designed to disappear. Like the rest of your conversations, they are end-to-end encrypted.
If a Void is reported within those 14 days, a copy of it is sent to our safety team for review, as described in Section 6. Void messages are never translated or sent to AI services.
OpenBook has zero tolerance for abusive, harmful or illegal content, and for anyone who targets other users.
Because your conversations are end-to-end encrypted, we can't see them — so a report is the one moment you choose to share content with us. When you report, a copy of the reported messages is sent from your device to our safety team, together with the account details needed to act on it. Reports are stored securely, seen only by our safety team, and kept only as long as needed to resolve them and meet our legal obligations.
We review reports promptly, aiming to act within 24 hours. Where content breaks our Terms of Service, we remove it and suspend or permanently remove the account responsible. Where the law requires it, we may share information with the authorities.
Chapters are posts you choose to share — photos, videos and moments. You decide who can see each one. Private Chapters are visible only to you.
Chapters are stored securely on our servers, but they are not end-to-end encrypted, because they are shared with more people than a conversation. Anyone you share a Chapter with can see it — and, like anything shared online, could save or screenshot it.
You can delete a Chapter at any time.
Luna is OpenBook's AI companion. Circle personas, Luna Lens, our AI document tools, translations your device can't do itself, and other Luna features work the same way, and everything in this section applies to all of them. When you use them, what you share is processed by a third-party AI model to generate a response. We want to be direct about how this works, because this is one place where your words leave the end-to-end encrypted envelope that surrounds the rest of OpenBook.
Private mode — fully private, on your phone:
Tap the ghost to put Luna in Private mode at any time. In Private mode, Luna runs entirely on your iPhone using Apple's on-device AI — whether you type or talk. On a voice call your speech is recognised on the phone, and Luna answers in your iPhone's own voice. Nothing in that conversation — including documents you attach — leaves your phone: it is not sent to us, to Anthropic, to ElevenLabs or to anyone else, and it is not saved. It exists only while that conversation is open. So that Luna still knows you, your phone may read your own Luna memory (below) into the on-device model; nothing flows the other way. Luna is a little less capable in this mode; that is the trade for absolute privacy. Some other features, such as suggested replies and parts of astrology, also use on-device AI where your iPhone supports it.
Who processes it (outside Private mode):
Luna and Luna features are powered by Claude, an AI model developed by Anthropic PBC, a company based in the United States. When you send Luna a message — or share a photo or document with a Luna feature — that content, together with relevant earlier messages and the context Luna needs to respond (such as your first name, the local time and the titles of your recent Luna conversations), is sent to Anthropic's API for processing. Anthropic returns a response, which we show you and store as part of your Luna history.
Voice conversations with Luna:
For OpenBook Pro, Luna's voice conversations are powered by our voice partner, ElevenLabs. While a call is open, your voice is streamed securely to ElevenLabs, which turns it into text, has Luna's reply written by an Anthropic Claude model, and speaks it back to you in Luna's voice. So that Luna knows you, your name and relevant parts of your Luna memory may be shared with that conversation. Other voice conversations use Apple's speech recognition (which, outside Private mode, may use Apple's servers), and that text is handled exactly like a typed message. OpenBook does not keep recordings of your voice. A voice conversation is saved to your Luna history like any other.
Luna's memory:
So Luna can remember what matters to you, she keeps a short memory of facts from your conversations with her — including voice conversations, which are read once when the call ends. This memory is stored under your account and is deleted with your account, or on request.
Photos and documents you share with Luna:
When you share a photo or document with Luna, a copy is kept in your private storage so you can open it again. You'll find them all in Shared with Luna, where you can delete any of them at any time — deleting removes our copy for good. Anything shared in Private mode is never uploaded.
What Anthropic does and does not do with it:
Under Anthropic's Commercial Terms of Service, which govern our use of their API, Anthropic does not use content submitted through the API to train their models. Anthropic keeps API inputs and outputs for a limited period for abuse detection and operational purposes, after which they are deleted. For full details, see Anthropic's Privacy Policy at anthropic.com/legal/privacy and their Usage Policies at anthropic.com/legal/aup.
What we store:
Your Luna conversation history is stored in our database under your account, so Luna can remember context across sessions and you can scroll back through past conversations. Luna conversations are not protected by OpenBook Zero — they are stored in a form Luna can read when it responds.
Your choice and consent:
We ask for your consent before you first use Luna and Luna features. You can choose not to use them — the rest of OpenBook works without them.
Your controls:
Lawful basis and international transfer:
We process content you share with Luna on the basis of your consent and our legitimate interest in providing the features you choose to use. Because Anthropic is based in the United States, using Luna involves transferring that content outside the UAE, the EEA and the UK. We rely on Anthropic's contractual commitments, including their Data Processing Addendum where applicable, to protect that transfer.
A note on what to share:
Luna is helpful, but it is not an end-to-end encrypted space. Treat it as you would any cloud-based AI assistant: great for thinking out loud, drafting and exploring ideas — but not the place for information you would not want a third-party processor to handle. Luna's wellbeing and food features offer general guidance, not medical advice.
When you use the music features in OpenBook, we may collect information about which tracks you listen to. This is used only to improve the music experience in the app — for example, to suggest music you might like.
We do not share your listening data with third parties or use it for advertising.
OpenBook uses these services to operate:
Each has its own privacy policy. We share only the minimum each needs to do its job. None of them are given the keys to your end-to-end encrypted messages.
Your data is stored on secure servers provided by Google Firebase, located in the United States.
Beyond end-to-end encryption, we use encrypted connections, encryption at rest, secure sign-in and strict access controls.
No system is completely secure. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at hello@openbookchat.ae.
We keep your data for as long as your account is active.
Some data may be kept longer where the law requires it.
You have the right to:
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@openbookchat.ae. We will respond within 30 days.
OpenBook is for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18.
If we learn that someone under 18 has given us personal data, we will delete it.
If you believe someone under 18 has an account, please contact us at hello@openbookchat.ae.
OpenBook is a mobile app and does not use browser cookies.
We do not track you across other apps or websites, and we do not use advertising identifiers. The only diagnostics we collect are crash reports, used to fix problems.
Your data may be transferred to and processed in countries outside the UAE, including the United States, where our service providers operate (such as Google Firebase and Anthropic).
We make sure any such transfer has appropriate safeguards under applicable data protection laws.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make significant changes, we will tell you in the app and update the date at the top of this page.
Continuing to use OpenBook after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.

Breaking these rules will lead to removal of the content and suspension or permanent removal of your account. Where the law requires it, we may report it to the authorities.
You can block any user, and report any user or message — including Void messages within 14 days of being sent — from within the app.
When you report, a copy of the reported messages is sent from your device to our safety team, as described in our Privacy Policy. We review reports promptly, aiming to act within 24 hours, and remove content and users that break these terms.
You can also contact our safety team at hello@openbookchat.ae.
Void messages are designed to disappear after they are viewed. Please remember that disappearing does not mean un-seeable: the person you send a Void to could still capture it — for example with another device. Only send what you would be comfortable with them keeping.
Voids are covered by the same rules as everything else on OpenBook, and can be reported for 14 days after they are sent.
You own the messages, media and Chapters you share on OpenBook.
By using OpenBook, you give Moneta Eight FZE LLC a limited licence to store, transmit and display your content only as needed to provide the service — for example, showing a Chapter to the people you shared it with.
You are responsible for what you post, and you must have the right to share it. We may remove Chapters or other content that breaks these terms.
Content you share with Luna or a Luna feature is also processed by our AI provider to generate responses, as described in our Privacy Policy.
We do not sell your content or use it for advertising. Ever.
Luna is OpenBook's AI companion. Luna and Luna features — including Circle personas, Luna Lens, Luna DJ and our AI document tools — are powered by Claude, an AI model provided by Anthropic PBC. Your use of them is subject to these Terms and, in addition, to Anthropic's Usage Policies, which we incorporate by reference and which are available at anthropic.com/legal/aup.
Private mode runs entirely on your iPhone using Apple's on-device AI, so nothing you share there reaches us or Anthropic. The rules in this section still apply to how you use it.
In particular, you agree not to use Luna or Luna features to:
AI responses may be inaccurate, incomplete or out of date. Luna is not a substitute for professional advice — medical, nutritional, legal, financial, psychological, religious or otherwise. Luna Lens and Luna's wellbeing features offer general guidance only. You are responsible for your own decisions and for checking any information before relying on it.
We may suspend access to Luna, or to OpenBook, if you use Luna in breach of this section.
For how Luna handles your data, please read Section 8 of our Privacy Policy.
Within Circles, OpenBook offers optional AI personas — characters you can bring into a group conversation. They are powered in the same way as Luna and follow the rules in Section 8.
Personas only respond when directly addressed in a Circle, and their memory is limited to that Circle. Messages addressed to a persona are processed by our AI provider so it can reply.
Luna and Luna features are powered by Claude, an AI model developed and provided by Anthropic PBC, a public benefit corporation incorporated in Delaware, United States (“Anthropic”). Anthropic processes content only for AI features. It does not receive your end-to-end encrypted conversations, your Voids, your music or any other content in OpenBook.
“Claude” and “Anthropic” are trademarks of Anthropic PBC. We acknowledge Anthropic's ownership of those marks and of the underlying Claude models, and we use them under Anthropic's Commercial Terms of Service.
Your interactions with Luna and Luna features are additionally governed by Anthropic's Usage Policies (anthropic.com/legal/aup), incorporated into these Terms by reference. If these Terms and Anthropic's Usage Policies conflict on your use of these AI features, the more restrictive provision applies.
Your privacy is fundamental to everything we build. We collect only the data needed to provide the service and never sell it.
Your one-to-one chats and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default with OpenBook Zero. It is on for every account and cannot be turned off. A Circle's host can switch on end-to-end encryption for that Circle at any time, and once on it can't be turned off. Messages are encrypted on your device with keys that stay with the people in the conversation — we never hold them.
For full details of how we handle your data, please read our Privacy Policy.
The music catalogue on OpenBook consists of tracks generated and distributed under commercial use licences held by Moneta Eight FZE LLC.
These tracks are provided only for personal, non-commercial listening within the app. Downloading, recording, screen-capturing audio, redistributing or reproducing any track outside OpenBook is strictly prohibited.
Unauthorised use or distribution of any track from the OpenBook catalogue may result in account suspension and legal action.
OpenBook provides in-app document signing, conversion and secure storage (Vault). Vault content is protected by OpenBook Zero, the same end-to-end encryption used for your conversations.
These tools are provided as a convenience. You are responsible for making sure any documents you sign or process are legally valid where you are.
We are not a law firm and do not provide legal advice.
OpenBook offers message translation as a convenience, only when you ask for it. We use Apple's built-in translation and on-device AI first; for languages your device can't handle, the message is translated by our AI provider, as described in our Privacy Policy. Translations may not be perfect, and we are not responsible for misunderstandings that arise from them.
